Portrait of cows in an old barn, HDR by Roger VDB

The image shows a close-up, HDR photograph of some cows in an old barn, with the light falling in a strikingly picturesque way, like in the works of Johannes Vermeer. The incident light accentuates the texture of the fur, the wooden beams of the barn and the dusty air, creating a serene, almost timeless atmosphere. The composition emphasises detail and material, while the cows are relaxed and natural in their surroundings. The sharpness of the shot ensures that every detail of the animals and barn is crystal clear, allowing the viewer to experience the intimacy of farm life almost tangibly.

The use of light is strongly reminiscent of Vermeer, who was known in the 17th century for his subtle and precise depiction of natural light in interiors. The work is also in keeping with the aesthetic of Dutch golden age paintings of still lifes and interior pieces, where light and shadow create a narrative and emotional effect. In contemporary photography, we find similar approaches in American photographers such as Gregory Colbert, who portrays animals in serene, almost painterly settings, and Todd Hido, who is known for his atmospheric treatment of light in interiors and landscapes.
