Mountains and forest are visible in the background suggesting that this scene is set in a monastery in a mountainous landscape. Painted in 1943 at the age of 22 during the occupation of Belgium.
Pieter had to flee from Lebbeke from the occupying forces but was later arrested and put to work in Boulogne sur Mere. It is therefore not entirely clear where this work was painted.
