They can reach a length of about 40 cm and weigh between 1 and 4 kg. In captivity they can live 8 to 10 years with outliers to 12 years. Fresh grass is the most common food. The animal gets its name from the sharp barking it lets out.
Prairie dogs are social animals, living together in several family groups in one area: a so-called prairie dog village. These villages are located underground, with each family having its own entrance with multiple rooms.
