The Puy Mary volcano is one of the better known volcanoes in Auvergne. From the parking lot at the top of the pass of Peyrol there is a footpath that bridges the difference in height of 200 meters from the parking lot to the top. This tough climb will take you about half an hour but is definitely worth it. From the top you have a beautiful panoramic view of the surrounding volcanic mountains. Most people walk after the top back to the parking lot. You can also make a steep descent from the top and then hike for a couple of hours around part of the original crater, which is very rewarding.
