Rabat forests have something mysterious about them.
Rabbats are elongated embankments. These are made from the soil next to both sides of the rabat.
Trees are planted on these embankments. The ditches next to them serve for drainage. This method of afforestation originated to get drier strips in swampy areas for afforestation.
Rat forests are disappearing more and more because the water level is nowadays too low rather than too high.
In this nature reserve, the rabbet forest is still there. It gives you the feeling of a maze and looks mysterious. And in this case, it is.
Once you have worked your way through the rhizomes, there turns out to be a beautiful little lake that cannot be seen from any road and in which beautiful water birds have found a safe and peaceful haven.
