The Oude Haven of Vlaardingen originated from a natural watercourse (tidal creek and watercourse coming from the adjacent peat bog) that originated northeast of the old town of Vlaardingen and flowed into the Maas with a large bend to the south. This watercourse is traditionally known as the Vlaarding and united in its lower course some other peatcourses, such as the Hooilede. These watercourses have almost completely disappeared under embankments during later city expansions. Along the Emmakade however there is still a ditch that is a remnant of the Vlaarding.
