Rainbow Basin is a geological formation in the Calico Peak Range, about 8 miles north of Barstow in the Mojave Desert in San Bernardino County, California.
The Rainbow Basin has been designated as a National Monument to Nature and is managed within the Bureau of Land Management Rainbow Basin Natural Area. Rainbow Basin is a mix of private and public land, but is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. It is accessible to the public via Barstow's Irwin Road to an unpaved road through the colourful pool.
The basin is remarkable for: the fantastic and beautiful shapes of its rock formation: its fossil beds, which have given scientists valuable information about life in the middle of the Miocene era, between 12 and 16 million years ago; and in the northeast the Calico Early Man Site.
