About the artwork
In a legend, St. George, a soldier revered in Christianity, defeats a dragon. The story goes that the dragon originally extorted tribute from villagers. When they ran out of livestock and trinkets for the dragon, they began giving up human tribute once a year. This was acceptable to the villagers until a princess was chosen as the next sacrifice. The saint then rescues the princess chosen as the next sacrifice. The story first took place in Cappadocia in the earliest sources of the 11th and 12th centuries, but was transferred to Libya in the 13th-century Golden Legend.
An unusual feature of the painting is the saint's blue garter on his armor-covered leg. The inscription, HONI, begins with the phrase Honi soit qui mal y pense (Shame be he who thinks ill of it), the motto of the knightly Order of the Garter, of which George is the patron saint.
Raphael (Urbino, April 6, 1483 - Rome, April 6, 1520) was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. In addition to frescoes, altarpieces and portraits, he created designs for churches, palazzos and tapestries.
Raphael was a master at incorporating influences from other artists - both contemporary and ancient - into original, harmonious compositions in his own style. He was therefore not an unimaginative eclectic, as some critics accused him of being.
