After a storm, the beach at Wijk aan Zee is covered with thousands of razor clam shells. The shiny, elongated shapes lie across the beach like a natural carpet, in shades of beige, brown and purple. It is a wondrous sight, a silent witness to the power of the sea and its constant movement.
Razor clams, also known as razor shells, normally live buried deep in the seabed. But when the waves and currents change, they sometimes wash ashore en masse. In this hushed scene, force of nature and impermanence come together. What was once a living organism now forms a pattern of lines, colours and structures that look almost artistic.
Those walking along the beach hear the soft crunching of shells underfoot. A reminder of the interaction between water and land.
