Reading old woman, Gerard Dou, ca. 1631 - ca. 1632
The book is so detailed that you can clearly see what the woman is reading: the beginning of the nineteenth chapter of the Gospel of Luke. It states that those who really want to do good must give as much as possible of their possessions to the poor. In stark contradiction to that message is the old woman's expensive clothing: she still attaches importance to earthly possessions.
