Red Umbrella – Rain and Light in Mixed Media by Arjen Roos

In *Red Umbrella – Rain and Light in Mixed Media*, atmosphere, colour and imagination come together in an image that cannot be pinned down to a single place or a single story. The work began with the idea of a rainy street in Paris, but during the creative process, the presence of a characteristic yellow taxi proved to be just as powerful. This gave rise to an image that exists somewhere between different cities, memories and cultures. Perhaps Paris, perhaps New York, or perhaps a city that exists only in the imagination.

Central to the composition is the red umbrella, a splash of colour that immediately catches the eye. Red often plays an important role in my work and can almost be seen as my signature colour. In this artwork, it serves not only as a visual anchor but also as a counterpoint to the cool blues, turquoise hues and soft greys of the rainy surroundings.

For this piece, I employed a mixed-media approach combining digital painting, collage-like structures, textures and photographic influences. The various layers create a rich visual composition in which new details continually come to light. Reflections on the wet street surface, distant light sources and weathered posters contribute to a dreamlike, almost cinematic atmosphere.

What appeals to me about this work is that it does not tell a fixed story. The figure under the umbrella could be on the move, waiting for someone, or simply experiencing a moment of calm amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. This openness leaves room for personal interpretation and allows every viewer to discover their own story.
