Deer goat with young Netherlands and Wadden Islands In the Netherlands, you can encounter roe deer almost everywhere. The Wadden Islands did not know roe deer, just as they do not have moles and squirrels. The animal was introduced by humans on Ameland and Terschelling. They are also found on the Wadden Islands of Borkum, Sylt and Föhr. The roe deer is sometimes spotted walking in the mud, but it will not succeed in walking to Terschelling because of too deep channels with too strong currents. In the 20th century, a roe deer did manage to make it to Ameland walking and swimming. Hunters then sent over a few roe deer goats for the solitary animal on the island. These developed into a big jump (in 2017, there are 170 animals). A roe deer was seen on Schiermonnikoog in 2009, but the species did not settle on the island.
