Reindeer are mostly known to us as Santa's helper, but they are important for survival for the original inhabitants of northern Scandinavia, the Sami. Thus, the reindeer sleigh is the oldest means of transportation in the far north and the animals are also kept for their skin and meat. These specimens belong to a herd that roams the forests near Inari. Part of the Sami still live traditionally as nomads who followed reindeer herds in their annual food migration. Although reindeer sleds and skis have now been replaced by snowmobiles.
