Rembrandt van Rijn, The anatomy lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp, 1632 Rembrandt was only twenty-five when he received the important commission to portray Amsterdam's surgeons. The portrait was commissioned in response to the anatomy lesson given by Dr Nicolaes Tulp in January 1632. Rembrandt depicted the surgeons in action - they are all looking at something else. The scene is given added dynamism by the great light-dark contrast. With this group portrait, the young painter demonstrated his fabulous painting technique and his great talent for painting vivid portraits.
