This building is in Valletta, the capital of Malta. It is the smallest capital in the European Union by population (about 6,000). Valletta is located on a peninsula, surrounded by two large natural harbours. It is a pre-planned city, which is reflected in the chessboard pattern in which the streets are laid out. The city contains many buildings from the time when the Order of Malta ruled the country and it is surrounded by imposing fortifications. Since 1980, the city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
