Located in the mountains of the same name, Rila Monastery is among the most visited sights in Bulgaria.
The monastery was built in the 10th century and has been heavily damaged several times over the centuries, but has always been rebuilt. Central to the complex are the main church and the Hrelyotoren, the oldest building dating back to the 14th century. The exterior of the church is dominated by domes and beautiful arches and pillars, the interior is best known for its beautiful frescoes. The church and the tower are centrally located in the courtyard and around them are the more than 300 rooms for the monks. All in all, the Rila Monastery is definitely worth a visit.
