The Pantheon is one of the most famous buildings in Rome and is located in Piazza della Rotonda. The temple in honour of all the gods looks rather inconspicuous from the outside, but when you enter it, you know why the former sanctuary of all deities is one of the greatest buildings in Rome.
The Pantheon was originally built by Marcus Agrippa in 27 BC as a conventional temple. After being struck by lightning, the Pantheon burnt down in 110 AD. It was not until Emperor Hadrian, the fourteenth Roman emperor, who was known for bringing prosperity to his people and building infrastructure, that the Pantheon was rebuilt around 119 AD. We owe the impressive dome as we know it today to Emperor Hadrian. The dome, the Rotonda, is an architectural masterpiece of Roman antiquity.
