For this work I used a photo taken from Rotterdam south as a starting point. Especially the high contrast of the thin ink with the resulting ink drips appealed to me.
Because I found the work too black and white after the drawing I used some watercolor to create some texture in the sky and water.
I'm not a Rotterdammer myself but I have lived in the Rotterdam area for many years so it is not so strange to use this beautiful and very photogenic city in my work. Especially the part of Rotterdam which is the main protagonist here as well, namely the Kop van Zuid and the Erasmus Bridge, is beautiful to see. The old Holland America line building and hotel New York combined with so much modern architecture is a pearl to behold. I am therefore regularly on or around the west quay or park quay to photograph this direction.
For this work, however, the view from the Buizenpark towards the Erasmus Bridge was used as a basis.
My work exists at the intersection of modern Pop Art and Expressionism, with influences from Modernism. Contrast, whether in light, color, or subject, plays a central role in my art. The color red is often prominently featured.
