Christ on the cross is depicted against a grey sky. On the upper left, one can discern a solar eclipse. In the background, one can see the city of Jerusalem, which may not be by Rubens himself. The titulus above Christ's head is in three languages: Hebrew Greek and Latin. Rubens probably chose the moment when Christ raises his eyes to heaven and says 'My God why hast thou forsaken me?' In the depiction, Christ does not wear a crown of thorns and has no wounds in his sides. Blood does come out of the wounds on his hands and feet. Peter Paul Rubens (Siegen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, 28 June 1577 - Antwerp, Brabant, Spanish Netherlands, 30 May 1640) was a southern Dutch painter of Flemish Baroque. He was also called Pieter Paul, Pieter Pauwel or Petrus Paulus.
