About "Rupert Bunny, The Rape of Persephone, c. 1913"

by Atelier Liesjes

About the artwork

Persephone, in Greek mythology, is the goddess of the realm of the dead and of spring.

Persephone was kidnapped just as she was picking flowers in the field. Hades, the god of the underworld and ruler of the dead, emerged with a horse and chariot from a chasm in the womb of the earth and pulled her onto his chariot. Persephone cried out for help, but to no avail: she disappeared with him into the darkness.

Rupert Charles Wulsten Bunny (Melbourne, September 29, 1864 - May 25, 1947) was an Australian painter.

Bunny's early work was heavily influenced by the English Pre-Raphaelites, with aestheticist and neoclassical tendencies, with great attention to detail. After 1900 his style became looser, more impressionistic, and he mainly painted portraits and landscapes in a typical fin de siècle atmosphere.
