One of the rustic alpine huts on the Priesbergalm at Berchtesgaden National Park. As the huts are covered with wooden shingles, the roofs used to be weighted down with heavy stones to prevent the shingles from flying off during storms. This traditional method is still used today and can be seen in many places in the Alps.
Alpine huts simply have an aura of warmth and cosiness. We think of cosy hours spent on the Alm in summer, of shelter in bad weather when it rains for days on end, of the cosy stove that warms us up again in winter when everything outside is covered in snow or the storm is lashing down. The alpine hut - a place of longing.
