Impression from the historic district of Seattle. Pioneer Square was once the heart of the city. The founders of Seattle settled there in 1852. After the Great Seattle Fire of 1889, dozens of brick and stone buildings were constructed by the late 1890s; to this day, the architectural character of the neighborhood is defined by these late 19th century buildings, most of which are examples of Richardsonian Romanesque Revival architecture.
