With a length of 225 kilometres, the Salzach is the longest tributary of the Inn. It originates in the Kitzbühel Alps near Salzachgeier near Krimml and flows into the river Inn near Haiming. Over 59 km the river forms the border between Germany and Austria. Like Salzburg, the Salzach derives its name from the salt trade, which was conducted via the river until the 18th century.
