Salzburg is a city in Austria and is the capital of the state of the same name. The municipality, which also has the status of a district, has almost 150,000 inhabitants, making it the fourth in the country. The city is located on the Salzach in the Flachgau region near the border with Germany. Salzburg is famous as the birthplace of Mozart and organises the Salzburg Festival in summer.
The much-visited city centre is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in its entirety. It is dominated by Baroque buildings, including the cathedral, and by the fortress Hohensalzburg, a medieval castle on a hill 120 m above the town.
Since the end of the eighth century, Salzburg has been the capital of an archdiocese whose influence stretched far into Bavaria and within Austria.
