Who doesn't know the famous Dragon Gate at the entrance to San Francisco's Chinatown? This eye-catching structure at the corner of Bush Street and Grant Avenue was a gift from Taiwan to San Francisco in 1969 and marks the southeastern border of the district that was established here in the 1850s as a Chinese enclave in the American metropolis and has held its own to this day. More than 100,000 Chinese live here in a total of 18 blocks along Grant Avenue and Stockton Street from Bush Street to Columbus Avenue, making it the largest Chinese community outside China. Only New York's Chinatown can match this city within a city.
