Scottish Highland Cattle – Strength and character in winter by SR Blaauw

In this photograph, you can see an imposing Scottish Highland cow up close, set against a snow-covered landscape. The animal stands half-hidden amongst bare branches and winter vegetation, creating a playful interplay of lines around its broad head and impressive horns. Its warm, reddish-brown coat stands out sharply against the white snow and is subtly illuminated by the low winter light. Particularly striking is the slightly protruding tongue, a small detail that lends the robust figure a surprisingly lively and almost quirky air.

The inspiration for this sculpture stemmed from a search for contrast: the raw power of the animal set against the fragile stillness of winter. During a cold walk, this moment arose in which everything came together – the light, the texture of the surroundings and the Highland cow’s posture.

The atmosphere is powerful yet understated. The combination of warmth and cold, of movement and stillness, creates a sculpture that continues to captivate. It invites you to look longer and discover new details time and again.

In an interior, this piece brings a strong, natural presence. The interplay of lines, colours and textures makes it a characterful work of art that fits perfectly into a modern, rustic or industrial interior and immediately catches the eye.
