Scottish Highland cattle in a white winter landscape by Evelien Oerlemans

To take this photo, in January 2026 I braved the snow-covered roads towards Huis ter Heide – a beautiful nature reserve in Tilburg – at the risk of my own life. Once I arrived, I knew straight away that the thrilling car journey had been well worth it. The entire landscape was covered in a thick layer of fresh snow. Even the trees in the background had turned almost completely white.

In this serene setting, a small herd of Scottish Highland cattle calmly made their way towards me. The four animals are scattered across the snow-covered path, creating a great sense of depth in the image. It is particularly the contrast between their warm reddish-brown coats and the cool, white surroundings that makes this photograph so special. The Highlander at the front is keeping a close watch on its surroundings, whilst the other animals seem to be following along at their own pace. Together, they form a beautiful and almost fairy-tale-like winter scene.

I love how powerful yet calm these animals can appear. Thanks to the soft background, the natural colours and the abundance of white, the photograph exudes a great sense of tranquillity. It is a winter nature photograph that would suit a light, rustic, Scandinavian or modern interior. The earthy brown tones bring warmth to the room, whilst the snowy landscape keeps the overall feel fresh and serene.

This photograph of Scottish Highland cattle in the snow is a lovely choice for lovers of wildlife photography, Dutch nature, winter landscapes and atmospheric wall art. Perfect for hanging on the wall in the living room, bedroom, study or hall.
