Tips for use

Point your camera at the floor or a piece of furniture first, then move it slowly up towards the wall. A bare white wall is hard for your phone to recognise.

About ‘Sea apple @ Komodo, Indonesia’ by Travel Tips and Stories

The sea apple (Pseudocolochirus violaceus) is one of the most colourful and bizarre creatures you can encounter in the underwater world. Although the Dutch name is reminiscent of a sea urchin (such as the common sea apple found in the North Sea), the tropical sea apple in Komodo is actually a sea cucumber. In the plankton-rich waters of Komodo National Park, they grow into breathtakingly beautiful, brightly coloured organisms.

Why the sea apple is so special
Colourful appearance: They have a spherical, egg-shaped body that can grow up to 20 centimetres in size. Their colours are spectacular: often a deep purple or royal blue base with bright red stripes, vivid yellow accents and bright blue suction feet.
An otherworldly way of eating: The sea apple is a filter feeder. On its upper side, it unfurls an impressive ring of feathery tentacles (often bright yellow, red or white). It uses these to catch plankton from the current. It then brings the tentacles one by one to its mouth to literally ‘lick them clean’.
Extremely toxic defence mechanism: If a sea apple is attacked, becomes stressed or is damaged, for example by a diver stirring up the water, it can release a deadly toxin called holothurin into the water. This toxin can kill all the fish in the immediate vicinity in no time at all. Furthermore, under extreme stress, they can regurgitate their own internal organs to distract predators.
