Secure in the Scale

by Christian Ovís

‘Safe in the Shell’ depicts a single white egg standing upright on a light-coloured surface. A sharp beam of light enters the picture from the top left, casting a broad diagonal streak across the grey background. To the right of the egg lies an elongated, dark shadow. The shell transitions from bright white on the left to a soft grey on the right. At the bottom, a small warm-coloured highlight is visible where the egg touches the surface.

The still life uses few elements, yet makes light and form distinctly palpable. The rounded contour of the egg contrasts with the straight edges of the areas of light. The empty space surrounding it emphasises the subject’s central position. A subtle texture on the surface and the subtle shading within the shell lend the image depth. White, grey and almost black define the colour palette, with just a small warm nuance to balance it.

This minimalist still life suits a calm, modern interior. In a kitchen, dining room or study, the egg forms a simple and recognisable focal point. Light-coloured walls, concrete-like shades and natural wood complement the soft colours. A dark detail can echo the shadow in the image. The clear composition offers scope to observe the interplay of light and shadow time and time again.
