A particular form of groundwater is seepage water. Seepage and seepage from and to the major rivers play an important role in areas close to river dykes. Seepage is water that seeps under the dike and rises from the ground. The flow is caused by a level difference in the outside water (or a high polder) and the polder level in a deep polder. During high tides on rivers, seepage is a well-known and normal phenomenon. In summer, seepage actually occurs, when the water level on the big rivers is lower on average than in the polder and the 'polder water' flows to the river via the subsoil.
