Inexperienced as he was, the young Rembrandt did not shy away from experimentation. Here he allowed light to skim along his right cheek. The rest of the face is shrouded in shadows. It takes a moment to realise that the artist is looking at you sharply. With the back of his brush, Rembrandt drew in the still-wet paint layer to accentuate the curls in his wild hair.
