The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the largest mosque in the United Arab Emirates and one of the largest mosques in the world. The magnificent mosque owes its name to the founder and first president of the United Arab Emirates, Zayid bin Sultan al Nuhayyan. In the Sheik Zayed mosque, which has 82 domes, 1000 pillars and four minarets, up to 40,000 people can pray simultaneously. The courtyard of the mosque consists almost entirely of white marble and is beautifully decorated with floral motifs, gold leaf and precious stones. Not surprisingly, the mosque is known as the most expensive mosque on earth when it comes to construction costs.
