Siberian ground squirrels are found in the Netherlands in the Wandelbos in Tilburg. As the name suggests, not a Dutch species. The most plausible story is that in 1972, during the closure of the former Burgers Dierenpark in Tilburg, when the animals were moved to other parks, a crate containing about 250 Siberian ground squirrels broke, allowing the squirrels to escape. They do not compete with other species and sustain themselves well. Siberian ground squirrels are also found here and there in northern Belgium.
These animals are reasonably approachable and, in Tilburg, simply live together with the much larger squirrels you can find all over the Netherlands.
