Silence over Lake Bled

by Rolf Schnepp

Lake Bled in Slovenia is at its most enchanting when the landscape is bathed in soft shades of blue and deep clouds hang over the mountains of the Julian Alps. At the centre of this landscape photograph is the small island with its famous Church of St Mary, whose slender spire soars high into the sky. The silhouette of the church is reflected in the calm water, extending its shape almost weightlessly into the depths of the lake.

The autumnal colours of the trees lend the island subtle, warm accents, whilst the cool colour palette of blue and grey emphasises the tranquil atmosphere. In the background, the medieval Bled Castle rises from a steep rock face. Together with the wooded shores and the mist-shrouded mountains, it creates a landscape that radiates tranquillity and vastness.

Lake Bled, known in Slovenian as Blejsko jezero, is one of Slovenia’s best-known natural and cultural attractions. Its picturesque island church makes it a popular subject for landscape photography.

This photograph offers a subtle interpretation of the famous location. The expansive sky and the vast expanse of water give the island a sense of space and allow the reflection to stand out particularly well. As a wall hanging, the photograph brings a calm, harmonious atmosphere to living spaces, offices and modern interiors.
