An overview of the Skyline of Rotterdam South, seen from Willemsplein. The Erasmus Bridge has become a truly iconic structure and, especially in the evening hours, is shown off to its best advantage by the beautifully lit cables holding up the bridge. With the lighting, I have tried to present the Erasmus Bridge as a silver jewel, with the Nieuwe Maas colouring almost gold underneath due to the city lights. An almost equally iconic structure is the Rotterdam, which at 162.000 square metres is the largest building in the Netherlands, we see on the right-hand side of the bridge. By using a long shutter speed in the camera and adjusting the lighting accordingly, the calm-looking water brings tranquillity to what is otherwise still a bustling city even at this hour. Because of its tragic but unique history, Rotterdam has turned destruction into modern development. For me, that makes Rotterdam the most fascinating city to photograph in the Netherlands. Precisely because it is so different from all other cities.
