On the highest point of the Halde Rheinelbe in Gelsenkirchen stands the sculpture Himmelsteppe, constructed by Herman Prigann (1942-2008), about 10 meters high, occasionally also referred to as Himmelsleiter - not to be confused with the Himmelstreppe on the Halde Norddeutschland near Neukirchen-Vluyn. It consists of large, old concrete blocks of the Koenerei Koenigsborn, which were stacked in the form of a staircase and is part of the sculpture forest, which continues north of the heap on the former colliery. From the small plateau below the Himmelstreppe, the view extends far beyond the Ruhr area to Bochum, Essen and Gelsenkirchen. The Halde Rheinelbe is one of the landmarks in the Ruhr Metropolis.
