The oldest mention of Culemborg dates back to 1281: the place was then called Culenburgh. In the course of time several variants have been used: Kulenborch (1305), Culenborgh (1353), Colemborch (1363), Culemborch (1472). The first part of the name refers to a pit, or puddle of water that has come into being at a dike breach (comparable to a wheel or kolk). The second part refers to the castle that was built around 1270 near the pit. So the name Culemborg means 'castle at the pit.
