The island of Porquerolles is the largest and westernmost of the southern French archipelago of Îles d'Hyères.
The island was privately owned by Belgian entrepreneur François-Joseph Fournier from 1912 to 1935. The island remained the property of his heirs until 1971, when it was sold to the French state.
