An elephant herd is led by the Matriach, the largest and strongest female elephant. Only when she feels the coast is clear does the rest of the herd also emerge from the trees and bushes. Here, the elephant seems to smile, signalling her approval. To the left behind her, you can see another elephant ready to emerge.
We saw this herd of elephants in Pilanesberg Nature Reserve Park in South Africa during a safari. A mighty sight when these huge animals are first invisible and then emerge like magic between the bushes, moving slowly towards you.
