About ‘Snow at the sacred bridge in Nikkō’ by Zeger Knops

Created in 1930 by renowned Japanese artist Kawase Hasui, this artwork depicts the iconic Holy Bridge (Shinkyō) in Nikkō during a serene winter scene. The bright red bridge stands out beautifully against the white snow covering the landscape. The calm, deep blue river flows under the bridge, while the mountains in the background are only vaguely visible through the falling snowflakes, creating a sense of mystical beauty. Hasui's masterful use of colours and subtle details evokes a sense of peace and tranquillity, characteristic of his work and the traditional Japanese woodcut technique in which he excelled.

The Shinkyō Bridge is an important cultural symbol in Japan, known for its spiritual significance and its beauty, especially during winter when a thick layer of snow transforms the landscape. This artwork invites you to slow down and appreciate the timeless beauty of nature in all seasons.
