The area is best known for its ryolite rock. Ryolite is a volcanic igneous rock resembling granite. Because of this rock, the mountains of Landmannalaugar are very colorful: yellow, red, brown and gray-green. In combination with the white snow, the mountain landscape looks like a painting.
