About ‘Sólheimasandur Iceland’ by Martin van Lochem

On 24 November 1973, an American Dc-3 crashed on the black sand beach of Sólheimasandur near the town of Vík. All crew members survived the crash. The exact reason for the crash is not known, although some sources suggest that the plane ran out of fuel after the pilot switched to the wrong fuel tank. The wreckage still lies on the beach near the sea. Although the wreckage is missing some pieces. The wings and tail section, for example, have disappeared, and no one knows where they have gone, although rumours suggest that a farmer took them to sell in Vík.
