Longexposure of South Limburg hills and river the gulp. The Gulp (French: Galoppe) is a fast-flowing tributary of the Geul in a hilly region in the Belgian provinces of Liège and Limburg, more specifically the exclave of Voeren, and the south of Dutch Limburg. The river is approximately 22 kilometres long from its source in Hendrik-Kapelle to its mouth at the Burggraaf Fort near Gulpen. The length is difficult to measure exactly because of the many meanders.
In Roman times the Gulp was called 'Galopia' or 'Gulippa', which means 'small gully' or 'upper stream'. The Gulp is a real trout stream: fast flowing and rich in oxygen. The brook trout is therefore very common. The landscape of the narrow valley of the Gulp is very similar to that of the Geul: a fascinating alternation of deciduous forests, meadows, fields, marshy banks, pools, orchards and hollow roads.
