About ‘South tower Schiermonnikoog’ by Edwin van Wijk

The Zuidertoren lighthouse was built in 1854, at the same time as the current lighthouse on the Dutch Wadden Island of Schiermonnikoog. Because people used to lack light characters, they sometimes placed two towers or fires so that sailors knew where they were. Moreover, two fires or towers could form a line so that ships could be guided along dangerous shallows. In 1910, the outer tower, the current lighthouse, was given a rotating light. From then on, people could also recognise the coast with a single light and this tower's light had become redundant. However, the tower remained standing and in 1950 was given the function of a water tower. The tower had this function until 1992. In 1998, KPN acquired the tower for the symbolic sum of 1 guilder. KPN has been using the Zuidertoren as an antenna tower ever since.
