The Spanish Steps are a unique Baroque monument in the heart of Rome. It was built according to the designs of the Italian Baroque architect Francesco De Sanctis between 1723 and 1725. The three parallel staircases symbolise the Holy Trinity (Santa Trinità), to whom the church at the top of the stairs is dedicated. The Spanish Steps are 68 metres long, 40 metres wide on their central terrace and 23 metres high in total.
The Spanish Steps are one of the favourite photo motifs of visitors to Rome from all over the world.
The Fontana della Barcaccia (Barcaccia Fountain in the foreground) was built by Bernini in 1627 at the request of Pope Urban VIII. The fountain in the shape of a boat commemorates the devastating flood of 1598.
