About the artwork

The first 14 km circuit used the public road between Francorchamps and Malmedy to Burnenville, then the road to Stavelot until Masta and from there via the Route de l' Eau rouge to Francorchamps from 1921 onwards. The first motorcycle race was organized in 1921, the first car race came in 1922. In 1924, one year after Le Mans, the first 24-hour race for cars took place.
From 1950, the Grand Prix Formula 1 of Belgium was organized every year. After several fatal accidents in the 1960s, the drivers' protests against the ultra-fast and unsafe circuit became more and more widespread, in 1969 F1 stayed away for the first time, and in 1970 the last Grand Prix was run for the time being. Pending the construction of a new circuit, Belgium would have to do without F1 in 1971, after which they went to the circuits of Nivelles (in 1972 and 1974) and Zolder (1973, 1975 to 1982 and 1984). Other races such as the 24-hour race and the 1000 km of Spa-Francorchamps continued on the old track, until the new, shorter and more winding circuit, with a length of 7 km, was put into use in 1979.
