The beginning of spring is always a little celebration. Snowdrops and crocuses stick their heads above ground level and make for a colourful sight. Just like on the Clingendael estate in The Hague. Snowdrops belong to the daffodil family and like the daffodil they are a bulbous plant. The plant itself is native to southern Europe and became established in the Netherlands in the eighteenth century. Who says snowdrops, actually says spring. Snowdrops can grow up to 20 cm high while the bulbs can reach 1.5 to 2 cm. Snowdrops can flower in February, March or April and are therefore an omen of the approaching spring.
