About ‘Squid @ Komodo, Indonesia’ by Travel Tips and Stories

There are various species of cephalopods in Komodo National Park in Indonesia, such as the large Sepia latimanus (broad-armed cuttlefish). The waters around Komodo are world-renowned for their spectacular biodiversity. The term ‘squid’ is the umbrella term for both octopuses (eight tentacles) and cephalopods, such as cuttlefish.

Species of squid in Komodo
Octopuses: Known for their intelligence and camouflage. Even the highly venomous blue-ringed octopus lives in Indonesian coral reefs.
Ten-armed cephalopods: Cuttlefish and squid that can change colour in a flash. The colourful Sepia latimanus is regularly spotted here by divers.

Where and when to spot them?
Divers and snorkellers can spot cephalopods throughout the national park, particularly in shallow coral reefs. Popular locations include the waters off Pink Beach (Pantai Merah) and the reefs near the island of Rinca. The best time to dive in Komodo is during the dry season, from April to November.
