The squirrel, red squirrel or common squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is a rodent in the squirrel family (Sciuridae). The squirrel is 20 to 28 centimeters long and weighs 250 to 350 grams. Its bushy pigtail is 15 to 20 centimeters long. It is an omnivore, belonging to the rodents. Contrary to what its name suggests, its coat color can range from black to yellowish, with various shades of red and brown in between. Melanism occurs, but the degree to which individuals are melanistic varies by region. Usually animals are reddish brown with a white belly side, more grayish dark brown in winter. The color also becomes more grayish as the squirrel ages. The ear tufts are especially noticeable in winter. A squirrel may raise the hairs on the plume tail.
