The Staalmeestersbrug is a drawbridge in Amsterdam-Centre.
It spans the Groenburgwal and is located in Staalstraat, which lies on both sides of the Groenburgwal. Next to bridge 226 it is the only bridge over the canal. The bridge, itself a municipal monument since 1995, is surrounded by municipal and national monuments, but there is also relative new construction to be found here. The bridge is a tourist attraction, but not always for the classic bridge itself.
From the bridge there is a beautiful view of the tower of the Zuiderkerk, which has been recorded by various artists. The most famous of these is without doubt Claude Monet, who painted it in De Zuiderkerk, Amsterdam as seen from the Groenburgwal and en passant also took the bridge with him, Monet was to make a series of Amsterdam paintings.
More recent is the wish of couples among tourists to hang so-called love locks on the ropes of the bridge. However, the construction of the bridge is not able to withstand the heavy metal that is thus suspended from the bridge; the bridge is therefore regularly stripped of its locks.
